What is Interference?

"I'm trying to join the island or leave the island but Orville is saying there is interference."

Typically in Animal Crossing New Horizons multiplayer, interference means someone on the island you want to visit has a window open, such as their Nook Phone, reactions menu, has the camera app open, etc. Anything that is not your villager standing still or walking is considered interference when trying to fly to an island.

However, interference when joining a Treasure Island is slightly different. Yes, it could mean someone on the island you are trying to fly to has a window open.

It could also mean someone is also trying to fly to the same island as you are at the exact same time. This is most likely the case when flying to a Max Bells, Treasure, or Catalogue Island, because they are popular and many people fly want to them at the same time. Only one person can fly to any Animal Crossing New Horizons island at a time. So if you are getting interference, it could mean that.

To fix this: keep selecting "check again". Eventually, Orville will let you fly to the island. Remember, you could have up to 6 people in front of you waiting to fly to the island, so you may need to "check again" multiple times. This because the island can have up to 7 visitors at a time.

You'll also encounter this interference message if you are trying to leave the island through the airport and someone has their NookPhone open. This means someone else on the island has a window open, such as their NookPhone menu, any NookPhone app, their inventory/pockets, accessing their storage in their homes or from a storage shed, accessing an ABD, accessing the NookStop, in the reaction menu, typing a message with the in-game keyboard, accessing the recycling bin, currently writing on the bulletin board, or in dialogue with a villager or NPC.

If you are experiencing this error when trying to leave the island, please wait until the other person(s) close their windows.
